Here is an outline of what my photography courses are about.

After spending many years traveling the world on his various fashion assignments, a major contract ended, leaving Bruce in a quandary as to finding a new direction for his photography.

Over a lovely long lunch with one of his clients and very good friend Louise, she made the suggestion to Bruce ! WHY DONT YOU TEACH, you have spent the last five years teaching me how to see more creatively, the understanding of light, the line, the form, composition etc, your ability to explain things in a very simple to understand manor has helped me a great deal, Im sure other photographers would love to learn from you.!

On another occasion, when asked by a photographer that Bruce met whilst having his hair cut, ! How do you achieve the look on your models faces and the magic stuff in your images because other photographers would love to learn how it is achieved !.

Its the ENERGY AND EMOTION in the image that the viewer responds to… This you put into your shoot for people to see and feel when they look at our images.

Bruce strive to teach photographers how to do this.. Hence in 2002 he began to set up the Bruce Smith Photography Academy.

Bruce believes that teaching live classes gets the best results, there is no better way to learn than being on set with him demonstrating how he achieves the energy he has in his pictures, this can not be portrayed nor learned via video's.

There is how ever a great deal of background information to be read in his fabulous and very informative book, Fashion Photography A Complete Guide, which is a must read before taking a live class with Bruce, that is if you can obtain a copy, they are becoming very rare......

Bruce Smith's New York Studio Fashion Photography Classes.

Bruce Smith is a terrific teacher and his classes offer a rare glimpse into the world of the professional fashion photographer.

I took Bruce's studio master class in New York City last May. For four days, I shot more than 1,000 frames and walked away with some of the best fashion images I'd made to that time. (That's one of my class pictures on the right.) We built sets, positioned and metered lights, and worked with models, MUAs and wardrobe stylists. We shot some really great models. And we had a lot of fun doing it.

One of the best things about Bruce's class is his willingness to share his knowledge and emotions. This is no staid lecturer. Bruce is with you shooting, watching and encouraging throughout.

Bruce teaches the importance of connecting with the models and demonstrates his technique with great flourish. The image of Bruce in my mind's eye is of him twisting, bending and posing together with the models -- a mirror image of their movements with a camera in one hand. Bruce shows the models what he wants by doing it himself and urging them on. He's obviously done fashion shoots a million times, but he makes it seem fresh each day.

To sum it up, I highly recommend Bruce's workshops for anyone interested in really becoming a fashion shooter. And even if you're not, it's sure to help your photography in a hundred different ways.

Hi Bruce,
Please find attached the first 2 images - the second 2, which are along the 3-picture-idea will follow later tonight.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated - I don't think I have enough images to make a story, but am very happy with what I feel I learnt on the course.
I've turned the first model we photographed black & white, and tried to bring out her freckles a little - I've also added a few simple graphic elements - please say if you think it's not needed.
I'm hoping to hire the perch studio to do some testing - and then may well be back on 1 of your testing courses with a load of questions.

Hi. I noticed that you would be teaching the class again in October. Is It possible that I could submit my projects for that class instead?
I am going through some unexpected personal problems (wife probably losing job) and really have not been able to focus on the course.
Hopefully by then everything will be sorted out and I will be able to Jump in with the time! It deserves and enjoys it a lot more.
So far the contents of the course are exceeding my expectations and your feedback has been timely and excellent.

Initially I was reluctant to join the workshop, as I did not have much confidence in-group workshops. Little did I know? Bruce's enthusiasm, humour and professional know-how miraculously turn my early Saturday morning into a highly interactive day filled with tips, hints and just the right amount of supervision! Bruce knows his stuff and certainly has his way in letting you know what he thinks you should focus on. I highly recommend his workshops. They are also great value for money!

It was really good hearing from you, I appreciate the time you put into the feedback. I believe you have helped get me to focus in on a few important details! I'm quite exited about all of this, since your e-mail which coincided with my reading of a few fashion photography articles, I think you have opened my eyes to a fresh perspective, well it's more of the ritual of thinking through, planning, and the development of consistency in story / message, which is funnily enough the backbone structure for what I do as an brand director in Leo Burnett, even though it's not creative that I'm involved in, it's the same concept.
I have quite number queries that are formulating in mind as I internalize your feedback (which I believe is spot on!) MOST IMPORTANTLY I will continue to push in order to ensure I GET ON WITH IT, I've committed to myself on shooting stories as opposed to just whatever crops up 2 seconds before I click the shutter! (I know there's always room for impulsive shots, but the focus for me now is to be able to produce controlled and consistent work as you recommended. I will start with the WHITE assignment. I like that; I have a few interpretations in mind, just need to decide on the direction.I'm assuming there's no creative formula on the idea, but usually the photographer comes up with direction or it's conceived with stylist, client.etc
I also like BAREFACE idea; I'll contact Beverly to see how far I can go with them.
Continuity is a very interesting concept, as having gone thru hundreds of magazines, each photographer and stylist and magazine seem to have a different way of creating continuity thru the shoot (I speak of the top notch stuff of course!). Also, creative shoot direction is intriguing, almost still feels overwhelming, as I seem allergic to clichés (but I'm sure I'll crack the sensation in due course!)
I think I'll start with natural light and gradually build up to flash, this way I'll remain focused on 1 BIG objective at a time.

I run these classes either on a luxurious boat sailing around the Turkish coast or staying at a very beautiful villa In Majorca.

MY FINE ART AND NUDE IMAGES

Shooting under fabulous sunny skies with the amazing coast line and countryside as a backdrops and amongst the ancient Turkish ruins.

There will be 2 fabulous professional full time models for you to shoot along with my team of professional hair and make up artist and stylist, to ensure the models look and are styled to their best.

Each day, we will cover various location photography techniques of shooting outdoors, these will give a good variety of both backgrounds and lighting situations, each with technical challenges that Bruce will help you to overcome with instructions, hints and valuable tips to get the best out of each location and the models.

Bruce much prefers to use available light but when it's needed he will show you his techniques of flash fill-in also how to get the best shots when using reflectors and diffusion screens.

He will take you out location scouting in the local areas around the Turkish coast or around the villa in Majorca, to give you an insight into choosing the best locations that suit the needs of different types of photography shoots, such as fashion, beauty, glamour, swim wear and fine art figure nude.

This slide show is images that I took whilst on the recce for the Majorca fine art and nude location master class. There are a few of my images shot either at the locations or at similar locations.

This master class is open to amateur and professional photographers. You can capture fabulous nude and glamour pictures, plus have a great time relaxing around the pool, enjoy eating beautiful local cuisine and drinking fine local wines.

Jenn one of the models for the Majorca class, these images were all shot at the location. There will be more images to see that i have shot there early 2011..

I will be at hand to give you one to one guidance to ensure you go home with some valuable experience plus the best possible pictures for your portfolio and personal collection.

Based around 8 photographers in twin sharing bedrooms, full board with beautiful freshly prepared meals, continental breakfast, typical local style lunch and dinner, a bottle of wine with your lunch and dinner every day.

Pre master class research, instructions and Itinerary for the above schedule will be sent to you before you leave home.

Relaxing in the late afternoon or you can arrange to shoot 1 on 1 with one of the models at an extra cost paid to the model on an hourly basis.

A pre-dinner drink will be served around 7.30pm and a beautiful dinner will be served at 8.00pm with a nice bottle of local wine per person.

WHY I AM ORGANIZING THIS EXHIBITION

During a recce trip to Kenya for a fashion shoot I was going to produce in Spring of 2002, I visited a remote Massai village in the north of Kenya. This is the story behind the picture of the little girl who's eyes are full of disease that can be healed with a few eye drops. If not treated could mean permanent eye damage or even loss of sight is very likely.

We had been traveling through Kenya looking for some good locations to shoot a collection of luxury travel clothing and travel accessories and wanted to shoot some scene's in a Massai village that had not been effected by modern tourism, our location manager and guide for the recce suggested we visit this particular village that was about a 4 or 5 hour drive away from any other towns villages or cities to guarantee a location as remote as could be found. Upon arriving in the village we were surrounded by children intrigued at who we were and why we were visiting their village. I produced a small digital point and press camera and showed the children some of the recce images that I had been shooting during the last 6 days traveling around Kenya. As you can imagine these children were fascinated by the images on the screen of my little ixus. I proceded to take lots of pictures of the children and showed them to them.. I guess they had never seen a digital camera before let alone instant pictures of themselves.

A man from the village approached me very obviously very drunk on a local brew with quite a menacing manor. He began to talk to me but I could not understand what he was saying but after a while I got what he was asking. Could I take a picture of him and his wife inside their house. I went with him to a small mud and twig built house outside of which was the little girl in the photograph, standing in the door way squinting from the brightness of the sun. I noticed the little girls eyes were very saw and matted. Not being aware at the time but she had a blindness threatening disease that could easily be treated.

Entering the house in which there was no light what so ever, having to feel my way by tough and sound. After a few minutes my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I began to see the shadow of a figure sat and another laying on what looked like a bed.

The exhibition has been set up to raise awareness for the charities bellow and to showcase photographers images that depict peoples lives reflecting ENERGY, EMOTION and FEELINGS.

We are looking for 100 final images for the exhibition.. These images will be digitally printed on archival quality paper, mounted and framed ready for the exhibition.

I will be donating 50 of my own images to be auctioned off to raise funds. They will not be entered into the competition..

There will be a public auction to sell the prints to the highest bidder, all funds raised from this auction will be split between Sightsavers International and to Liverpool's charities providing photographic education to children with learning difficulties and social problems.

I will be doing my best to make this a national and international exhibition.

Submissions are welcome from any one from any where in the world...

Exhibition date: 31st October 2010. It will be on display at the gallery for 5 days after opening event which will be 7pm until 10pm. Then 9 until 5pm each following day.

Each individual wishing to have their images considered for the final exhibition need to submit up to 3 images for consideration. There is a fee to submit your 3 images of £10, this must be paid before your images will be entered for consideration.

Images need to be sent via email with Images Of People in the subject box, format to be jpg at 72dpi 42cm x 29.7cm. No more than 3 images can be submitted. You will be informed as soon as selection has been made. If any of your images are selected for the exhibition, you will need to send them as high res jpg at 300 dpi 42cm x 29.7cm of each selected image to email. There will be a fee of £15 per selected image to cover administration for the exhibition.

When you have submitted your images you will receive a paypal payment request for the £10 entrance fee.

If your images are selected for the exhibition you will receive a paypal payment request for £15 per chosen image.

Copy right to any submitted images will remain with the artist of the work but a liceince to use submitted images must be granted to help promote this event and any future event that maybe set up to promote any future exhibitions.

My LIGHTING tip for October

USING FILL -IN FLASH to beat the falling light at the end of your days shoot.

If your shooting late in the day with that beautiful gold, contrasty light but you loosing this amazing light because the sun is goes down. I am often in this situation but still need to shoot pictures that day.

Like on a shoot I was doing in Western Australia for a swimwear client. We were shooting our last collection of swimwear for the day but the sun was going down very fast, I still had 4 shots left and they need to have a consistency with the rest of the shots Id been doing.

This is how I got over the problem:

I had my assistant holding a Californian Sunbounce mini reflector, with the gold foil cloth attached, at an angle pointing towards my model, high up to the left side of my position, I aimed a Metz flash gun onto the reflector so it bounced the lovely golden light onto my modeI. You can achieve the same bounced light using a battery powered Ranger Flash from Elinchrom which is what I use now to achieve this.. My old Metz packed in this year..

I set the flash exposure to be approx 1.5 to 2 stops under the ambient light reading taken from my models position.

This is one of the shots taken using this technique.

Example of camera and flash settings:

My ambient reading (taken from the same position as my model) was 125th sec at f5.6, I adjusted the power output of the Metz flash gun to give me a flash reading, ( taken from the same position as my model ) of f2.8 to f2.8 and a half stop.

If you set the power any higher, the fill-in flash starts to take over the ambient light and starts to look like you have used flash on your shot.

This is why I choose to have my flash out put at 1.5 to 2 stops under the ambient reading. Try this yourself the next time your shooting late or your shooting in the shade..

Marketing yourself as a serious fashion photographer

HOW TO SHOW THE WORLD THAT YOUR READY TO SHOOT AS A PROFESSIONAL

You have been testing and testing and testing, you have a portfolio of 20 or 30 amazing fashion images and you are confident that your ready to show your work to the fashion world and to the serious commissioners of fashion photography , such as FASHION DESIGNERS, BRAND MANAGERS, ART DIRECTORS, FASHION, BEAUTY and FEATURES EDITORS

This process starts by sending out a good quality printed card of the highest possible quality to potential clients.

You need to produce an A5 210mmx148mm or 8inx6in Z-Card. This card needs to depict your best highest quality work reflecting your type of photography, your style that's unique to you, the area of fashion of photography that you specialize in. It needs to be well designed to impress designers, art directors, editors etc seeing this card, so it must also be a modern design.

The images must reflect current trends in fashion as well as up to date looking photography. The card will need to show your name, your contact details, telephone number, cell or mobile number, email address and web site address. Remeber that your images are important to infuence a client, your name is very important but your images will play the biggest part in getting a client to call you and your book in..

If you shoot catalogue the images must be be your best catalogue pictures showing that you understand selling fashion off the page, as in images that show shape, colour, style, cut, length, fit etc etc..

If you shoot editorial (magazine work) the images must be editorial images reflecting trends in fashion that are upto date, as well as being exiting trendy and edgy.

If you shoot advertising fashion, the images must depict that you understand the needs of a fashion client or art director, also that you can reflect brand or advertising message awareness in your images. Often very similar to editorial fashion images.

AN IMAGE WITH OUT ENERGY IS NOT WORTH LOOKING AT

!!! Why do you need to gain energy and emotion in your pictures? !!!

“ The energy and emotion in your images is all about directing.”

“ Directing is all about exchanging energy and emotion between yourself and your subject onto your digital chip.”

When I began to shoot more than three decades ago, I felt that mine and a lot of other photographers fashion photography lacked vibrancy and realism. The models were and are still being turned into nothing more than showroom dummies. I have set about to change all that.

I wanted to achieve greater levels of energy, emotion and realism in my own fashion images but, I didn’t know how to achieve this. I spent a great deal of time experimenting with my directing and found that the best way to achieve any level of energy and emotion in my images was to express and portray the level of energy and emotion that I wanted with my own energy and emotion, etc etc.

I shoot a wide variety of work ranging from bathing suits on location to bridal wear in the studio. I approach this wide gamut of fashion with this in mind “Pictures need to have a purpose, and that starts with the clients wishes and needs to achieve when the images are viewed or used for what ever purpose they are shot for.. So, I find out the motive for the shots, be it romantic, sexy, sensual or soft, lively, exciting or dramatic.

Once I understand the feelings that the client needs, I can add the energy and emotion that’s appropriate to the subject into my directing during my shoots, whether it’s bridal gowns or underwear.”
During my talks and demonstrations, I will express, demonstrate and explain how I achieve energy and emotion in my own images.

Like many successful photographers, Bruce Smith achieved his first big break in fashion photography by setting up a test shoot with a model. Inspired by great photographers from the decades past, such as Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson, David Bailey, Barry Lategan, Horst P Horst, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, he borrowed some Fifties’ style gowns from a top fashion designer who sold her clothes through exclusive London stores. Such was the impact of these images on the designer, she commissioned Bruce and what started as a test, became a spread in one of the UKs leading fashion magazines, at the time ‘Avante Guard’.

This recognition of his talent set Bruce off on a journey that has so far, spanned over 30 years. Confident and adventurous, he developed his own style and built a reputation for creating stylish, ‘classic’ images in couture and bridal wear. The next big break followed soon after. Catherine Raynor, a leading UK bridal wear couture designer, who had previously worked with such iconic photographers as Norman Parkinson, Terrance Donavan and John Swanell, commissioned Bruce to shoot for her. Her status within the bridal wear industry, and the success of the images that he had produced for her, created a chain reaction which brought a queue of top bridal wear and couture designers to his studio door to shoot their collections.

By now, Bruce was becoming established as a leading fashion photographer. A commission from a leading UK bridal wear consumer magazine to shoot two editorial stories on location in Tobago led to many years of shooting high fashion for some of the top designers and manufacturers of couture and bridal wear, including Margaret Lee, Lyn Ashworth and Eleni Costi. Bruce’s classic fashion images inspired a long list of lingerie and hosiery and swimwear commissions from brands including, Charnos, Lapel, Silhouette and MissKini and Panache.

Shooting advertising campaigns, image brochures and catalogues, producing fashion shoots in some of the world most beautiful and exotic locations from Alaska to Kenya, Bruce had by now learned to arrange complete production for major fashion shoots. From the sourcing of the production teams, location managers, catering, location transport, even helicopters and arctic supply vessels, Bruce would control all of the necessary elements of high calibre fashion shoots. Shooting on location, with all of its challenges, taught Bruce to shoot fast with available light and utilse all of the skills necessary to create successful fashion stories .

With the advent of digital capture, Bruce recognized the need to be at the forefront of technological advances. Moving from Nikon F4’s to D series bodies, he has been a dedicated advocate of the Nikon system.

Every week for 8 weeks, beginning on 1st of every other month each student will receive a simple, clear, and helpful lesson via email.

Each weekly lesson will focus on a single topic. For example, you'll learn how to:

Lesson 1: Research your ideas from magazines, putting together a storyboard.
Lesson 2: Put together your team assistants, models, hair and make-up and stylists.
Lesson 3: Find your locations, interior or exteriors. Getting prepared to be prepared.
Lesson 4: Briefing your team
Lesson 5: Preparation before your shoot, determining what you will need. Checking that your equipment is working. etc.
Lesson 6: Start shooting... Building a rapport with your team - especially your model. Directing your photography.
Lesson 7: Image selecting and editing
Lesson 8: Making your story hold together. Some basic techniques in Photoshop to enhance your pictures. Adding typography.

Each lesson - comprised of text and colour photos – that will discuss the concepts in an easy-to-understand, non-technical language and can be easily downloaded and printed. This way, you can make the most of the lesson in your own way, at your own pace, and in the comfort of your own home.

Each lesson has an assignment for you produce your own pictorial fashion story to help your progress. This will be written at the end of each lesson.

In order to achieve the best possible results from your shoots during class, I highly recommend that you take the 1 day editing and photoshop class. This class is very biased towards the editing and selecting of your images. A great shoot can be ruined by bad selecting.

This event has to be the best of its kind. I will be teaching a 1 day master class in shooting swimwear and 1 day editing and photoshop at the Ujena Jam Cancun. I attended the year before last and have been gutted that I could not find the space in my diary until 2011 to attend again..

The Ujena Jam is a gathering of photographers, models, stylists and hair and make up artists, all brought together by the amazing Ujena team. There are some great prizes to be won along with fantastic parties and other events such as fishing tournament, marathon run plus lots more besides the best of competitions. It will be held in a 5 STAR hotel in Cancun Mexico.

This is a fashion photography experience, planned just like a professional commercial/editorial shoot for a top level client.

You will receive one to one and group tuition in all aspects of shooting swimwear photography on location, and where better than in one of the most beautiful locations in the World, Cancun Mexico. You will learn so much and capture some fabulous fashion pictures for your portfolio as well as give yourself a great advantage re winning prizes during the Ujena Jam competitions.

Shooting amazing swimwear models on the beach's under fabulous sunny blue skies, as well as at some fabulous locations as backdrop's, all carefully selected especially for shooting swimwear.

There will be 2 fabulous swimwear models for you to shoot, along with the Ujena team of professional hair and make up artist and stylist, who will create up to date styling looks so your portfolio images will be right up to date to ensure the models look and are styled to their best.

I will cover various location photography techniques, using both indoor and outdoor locations. These will give a good variety of both backgrounds and lighting situations, each with technical challenges that Bruce will help you to overcome with instruction, hints and valuable tips to get the best out of each location and the models.

Bruce much prefers to use available light but when it's needed he will show you his techniques of fill-in flash. He will also demonstrate how to get the best shots when using reflectors and diffusion screens.

There will also be an editing and Photoshop class on the day after the class to give you tuition in image selection and Bruce's retouching techniques that he uses to produce his fashion images.

Bruce will be at hand to give you guidance to ensure you go home with some valuable experience plus the best possible pictures.

3 and 5 Day Location Fashion Class Schedule

Day 1
09.00 until 10.00: Introductions and Tea/Coffee
Getting to know each other. The next five days will be a great creative and learning experience! During this introductory session, you will get to know Bruce and the people that you will be enjoying this week with and finding out why we’re all here. Some want to shoot fashion for a living, some want to bring fashion into their social photography, others just want to learn something new. Whatever the reason, we all want you to get the most from the next five days!

10.00 until 12.00: Briefing
Bruce will outline the format for the week and break down the key learning objectives for the Master Class. Below is a summary of what we will cover during the three or five days of the class.

! Learn how to generate a flow of positive energy into your own pictures
! You will also learn how to compose your images
! Work your images to fit layouts and pages of magazines
! Learn how to manage your digital workflow

! Learn how to make the most out of available and artificial lighting
! Find out how to use your meter to control image contrast and exposure

12.00 until 13.00: Research for the shoot
Finding the right location for your fashion shoot can be one of the most challenging parts of the process, with most locations we use for class, some of these particular challenges have been overcome! We have stunning locations.

Your task is to peruse your magazines and ‘tear sheets’ to find your ideas and inspiration. When reviewing these images, ask yourself, ‘how has this shot been set up?’ Look at the effects of the styling and hair/make up. Look at the lighting and think how you might create a similar effect. Each of these elements goes into making your shoot a success.

13.00 until 14.00: Break for Lunch

14.00 until 17.30: Recce locations/planning for shoot.
Having established the location, Bruce will talk you through some of the ideas that will help you decide how best to create your shots. He will encourage you to think how your pictures will look in magazine spreads. Bruce will show you how to create your images as left hand or right hand pages or double page spreads. You will also see examples of the angles you might use and consider whether you mix close up with full length, wide angle or cropped. As these factors will establish how your images will look on the page and are a vitally important part of the creative process, you will be able to use the information from this session to aid your shooting over the following three days.

17.30 until 18.00 The Wrap
Bruce will recap on the key learning points from the day and preview the next three days of shooting.

Day 2, 3 and 4 ( or 2 and 3 for 3 day location class )
Days 2, 3 and 4 will follow the structure laid out below. Each shooting session will feature a different look with hair, make up, outfit and the model combining to help you create your own fashion story. As you progress and develop over days 2,3 and 4 you will put your own interpretation and style into your shooting, creating a story that is unique to you.

Time on set will fly by!! With this in mind, it is vitally important that you have an effective method of managing your workflow. The next section is a guide that is designed to help you manage your images, maximize the time available to you and finish with the best output from your shooting.

Each day, you will create a selection of 3 images from each shoot that can be used either in conjunction with each other as a two page spread or as individual pages. These will form part of the Image Review, an opportunity to gain that all- important feedback on your images of the day.

Before we begin shooting,

1. Create a folder for the class, call it ( example )BSLFMCHCHAPRIL2010
2. Create a folder for the each of the 3 shooting days
3. Within each shooting days folder, create a folder for each outfit,
4. Within each outfit folder create 2 folders folders,
5. One folder for RAW files and one folder for JPegs.
6. In the jpgs folder, create a 1st edit folder
7. Within the 1st Edit folder create a 2nd Edit folder
8. Within the 2nd Edit folder create a Final Edit folder.

Before you begin shooting, set your frame counter to continuous, your white balance to daylight, your exposure mode to manual, the colour space to adobe 1998. The only ‘auto’ setting allowed during class is ‘auto focus’!!

Composition When Shooting

Bruce will be talking you through the fundamentals of shooting for a ‘spread’ or fashion story. We should always aim to shoot each outfit as full-length shots, three quarters shots and close up shots, ensuring a bias to the left and a bias to the right. This is so that the final edited images can be balanced as two images side by side or as double page spreads.

08.30 until 10.30 Hair, make up and styling.
While your model is in hair and make up, Bruce will explain the key roles of hair stylist, make up artist and costume stylist and their importance to a successful fashion shoot. You will learn how these key roles influence the look and feel of a shoot and the importance of the collaboration between the photographer and these key members of the team.

In this session, Bruce will also outline the sub editing process and the importance of simplifying your workflow to ensure the best use of your time whilst on set. This will enable you to understand the shooting/sub editing process and maximize your time on set.

10.30 until 12.00: Shooting
We will shoot 2 to 3 outfits. Bruce will lead with a demonstration of his unique style of shooting which will enable you to see first hand how energy, communication and work rate combine to capture great fashion shots. You will then work with the model and develop your style of shooting to produce great fashion images.

Following your initial shoot, you will then sub edit your images to produce your selection for a spread.

13.00 until 13.15 Morning Wrap
Bruce will summarise the morning session, highlighting key learning points from your first shoot with the model.

13.15 until 14.30: Break for Lunch

14.30 until 16.30: Shooting
The afternoon shoot will feature a different look and style. Again, Bruce will lead by demonstrating how the direction given by the photographer reflects the change in the look and the theme of the story.

You will be able to observe Bruce and your colleagues as well as practise your own ideas with the model. Following your shooting session, you will sub edit your images for the end of day image
review and feedback session.

16.30 until 17.00: Sub editing your day's images – Managing your Workflow
Edit your images as follows as follows:

1st edit images down to as many as will work, then label red, 2nd edit images down to 20 / 30, label them label blue, 3rd edit to final 4 to 6, label them green. Process these as bellow.

For each outfit we shoot, select a full-length image for a left and a right hand page and a close up for a left and a right hand page and a three quarter image for a left and a right hand page. This should be done during the time in between your shoot and the end of the session for that particular look.

Keep in mind as you edit that you are looking for images from each outfit that will work together, showing some thing different about the outfit in each shot chosen for a double page spread.

When you have finished your 3rd and final outfit edit, copy the final edited images into your raw images folder, this will highlight the raw files of your final choice images, process these images to useable tiff format images with -4ret at the end of the file name ready for photoshop retouching.

Also save as a jpg with -4ret at the end of the filename. i.e. you will have for each images you
process...

Managing Your Workflow – Continued

Create a folder with your name and the shoot day within this folder create a folder for each outfit. Place a copy of each final processed image (file names ending in   -4ret.jpg ) into the outfit folder for each of the outfits for each day of the shooting, etc etc.. Load this folder onto the toggle provided to you on day 1 of class.

NB: Do not do any photoshop retouching to your images during shooting days of class, leave this until the evening or the photoshop session on the final day.

This process will enable you to efficiently organize and select the final images that you are going to work on and allow you to maximize your time on set.

17.00 until 17.30 Image review
Bruce will review the image selection of all course members and offer insights and feedback on composition and layout. This is a particularly valuable feedback session as it will provide essential guidance that you will be able to use during the following days and beyond.

17.30 until 17.45 The Wrap
Bruce will summarise the learning from the key aspects of the day, giving individual feedback and answering your questions.

As days 2,3 and 4 follow this format, The Wrap from each morning and afternoon will enable you to review your progress and development from session to session. By the end of day 4, your collection of images will illustrate the progress that you have made in just a few days.

Shooting on Day 3 and Day 4
On Day 3 we will shoot 3 to 4 outfits and on Day 4 we will shoot 4 to 5 outfits, all outfits to be shot as full length three quarters and close up.

By the third day of shooting, you will be feeling much more confident working with the models, giving direction and picking your shots to fit your layouts. This is the time for you to ‘let it all hang out’ and
really make the most of the experience that you have gained over the previous days.

You will have already seen that the more energy you put into your shooting and directing your model, the more you will see in your shots. With more outfits to shoot than in the previous days, it is imperative that you are prepared for your shooting session when it comes around.

Sub-edit your shots as efficiently as possible following your shoots and ensure that you are prepared for your next session.

13.00 until 13.15 Morning Wrap
Bruce will summarise the morning session, highlighting key learning points from your first shoot with the model.

13.15 until 14.30: Break for lunch

17.00 until 17.30 Image review
Bruce will review the image selection of all course members and offer insights and feedback on composition and layout. This is a particularly valuable feedback session as it will provide essential guidance that you will be able to use during the following days and beyond.

17.30 until 17.45 The Wrap
Bruce will summarise the learning from the key aspects of the day, giving individual feedback and answering your questions.

Day 5

09.30 until 13.00: Editing of your images
During this session, Bruce will take you through the process of selecting and using your final images to make them work as a fashion story. This is the process that all fashion stories go through whether for Vogue, Harpers Bazaar or any of the less well known fashion publications. Bruce will help you establish how certain images work together on the page, how to allow for text and what to avoid.

13.00 until 14.00: Break for Lunch

14.00 until 17.30: Photoshop instruction
This session is not intended to teach you how to use Photoshop! Bruce has a range of tried and tested editing processes which guarantee that he will be able to make his final images ‘magazine ready’. This session is all about making your final images ready for publication and like all of the previous sessions,
will be highly interactive.

17.30 until 18.00:THE WRAP!
We are sure that, by this stage, there will be a lot of information running around in your mind and the previous Monday morning will seem like an age away! Bruce will summarize the week’s learning and events and provide an opportunity for questions from you that will round off a great week. This is the time to have those last minute, ‘burning questions’ at the ready!

NB. We feel it important that you achieve a range of high quality images from this Master Class, however, images from the Master Class may only be used for your portfolio’s, websites and comp cards and may not, under any circumstances, be sold to or used by any third parties.
